Everything Snapr can do, step by step. Can't find it? Ask us.

Need a person instead? Questions about your license, payment, refund or a bug go to support.snapr.dev. You'll get a reply by email. Everything else is answered below.

Getting started

  1. Run the installer. It installs just for you and doesn't need admin rights. Tick Start with Windows if you want Snapr ready after every restart.
  2. Snapr lives in the system tray, bottom-right near the clock (it may be under the ^ arrow). A notification confirms it's running.
  3. Press Shift+PrtSc and drag over anything. That's your first screenshot.

There are two versions: Snapr Free (download it from this site) and Snapr Pro (a separate download, linked in the email you get when you buy). See Free vs Pro.

Can't see the tray icon? Open Snapr again from the desktop or Start menu. It doesn't start a second copy; it opens Settings, where you'll also find every shortcut (Settings → Shortcuts) and a Quit Snapr button.

The tray menu

Click or right-click the tray icon for every option. Double-click it to capture a region straight away.

  • Capture region / full screen / delayed capture. Delayed capture waits 3, 5 or 10 seconds, so you can open a menu or hover a tooltip first.
  • Scrolling capture, Record video (MP4), Record GIF.
  • Step-by-step guide: start a guide, or continue, finish or discard the one in progress.
  • History… and Open captures folder.
  • Open editor after capture: tick it to annotate every screenshot, untick it to save and copy instantly (see below).
  • Start with Windows, Settings…, your license status, and Quit.

While a recording is running, clicking the tray icon stops it.

Taking screenshots

Press PrtSc, Shift+PrtSc or Win+Shift+S (or Ctrl+Alt+S on keyboards without a PrtSc key). Snapr takes over Windows' screenshot keys, so the Snipping Tool won't pop up; untick this in Settings → Hotkeys if you want them back. One exception: Windows doesn't let any app see keys pressed inside an app running as administrator, so there Win+Shift+S still opens the Snipping Tool. Snapr tells you when that happens; use the tray icon, or run that app normally. The screen freezes, so menus, tooltips and hover states stay put while you choose. Then:

  • Drag to select an area. The size shows next to the selection, and a magnifier helps you line up edges to the pixel.
  • Click to capture the window under the cursor (it's highlighted as you move).
  • Press Enter or Space for the full screen.
  • Press Esc to cancel.

Ctrl+PrtSc captures the full screen in one go, with no selection step.

Editor or instant copy

By default each screenshot opens in the editor. If you usually just paste screenshots, untick Open editor after capture in the tray menu, or pick it in Settings → General. Screenshots are then saved and copied to the clipboard instantly. Click the notification that appears to open that one in the editor after all.

Multiple monitors

Full-screen captures (Ctrl+PrtSc, the tray item, or Enter while selecting) take only the monitor your mouse is on. Move the mouse to the screen you want, then capture.

Want every screen in one image? Settings → General → Full-screen capture → All monitors, as one image. Region and window captures work across all monitors either way.

The editor

Tools sit along the top. Pick one with the mouse or the number keys:

  1. Arrow: point at things.
  2. Rect: outline an area.
  3. Pen: draw freehand.
  4. Text: click to type (set the default size in Settings → General → Editor).
  5. Blur: drag over anything private.
  6. Highlight: a highlighter-pen stripe.
  7. Step: numbered badges (1, 2, 3…) for instructions.
  • Colour: Snapr picks the colour that stands out most against your screenshot. Choose any other swatch to override it.
  • Thickness: the slider next to the colours.
  • Move or resize: double-click a shape to select it, then drag it or its handles. Delete removes it.
  • Undo / redo: Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y.
  • Zoom: Ctrl+mouse wheel.
  • Styles ▾: save the current tool, colour and size as a named style and re-apply it with one click. Handy for keeping docs consistent.

Finishing

Press Enter or click Finish. The image is saved to your captures folder, and either the image or its file path is copied, whichever you picked under Output. Finish & upload also uploads it and copies the share link. Esc closes the editor without saving.

Auto-redaction Pro

In the editor's side panel, tick what to hide: emails, API keys, card numbers, phone numbers, IP addresses, faces. Then click Find & blur.

  • Change the ticks and run it again. The blurs update to match (untick Faces, re-run, and the face blurs go away).
  • Blurs you drew yourself are never touched.
  • Each run is one undo step.
  • Everything runs on your PC. Nothing is sent anywhere to be scanned.

Always glance over the result before sharing. Automatic detection is a big help, not a guarantee.

Beautify Pro

Turns a plain screenshot into something ready for a tweet, slide or README: a gradient background, padding, rounded corners and a soft shadow. Choose a social aspect ratio to fit a platform's image size. The preview updates live, and your choices are remembered for next time.

Scrolling capture Pro

Captures something taller (or wider) than your screen, such as a long chat, a spreadsheet or a code file. It works in any scrolling area in any app, not just browsers.

  1. Press Ctrl+Alt+L. Select the area that scrolls, or click its window.
  2. Click exactly where Snapr should scroll, for example inside a chat pane or a table. Shift+click scrolls sideways instead.
  3. Snapr scrolls and stitches automatically. Press Enter to stop early, or Esc to cancel.

Prefer to scroll yourself? Press M for manual mode and scroll at your own pace.

Sticky headers and footers are detected and only appear once in the result.

Recording video & GIFs Pro

  1. Press Ctrl+Alt+R for an MP4, or Ctrl+Alt+G for a GIF. Select an area, click a window, or press Enter for the full screen.
  2. In the setup panel, choose your options:
    • System audio and Microphone (MP4 only). Live level meters show whether sound is coming through before you start.
    • Webcam bubble: a round camera view that's part of the video. Drag it anywhere and scroll the mouse wheel over it to resize. It stays on top of other windows.
    • Highlight clicks and Show keystrokes. Leave Shortcuts only on and only combos like Ctrl+C appear, so passwords never end up in a video.
    • Draw on screen: adds a ✏ pen to the recording controls (or press Ctrl+Shift+D). Draw with the mouse to point things out; 1–4 change the color, Ctrl+Z undoes a stroke, and turning the pen off (or Esc) clears the ink.
    • Show mouse cursor, frame rate (15/30/60 fps for video, 5–30 for GIF) and a countdown.
  3. Press Start (or Enter). A red frame marks the recorded area.

Pausing and stopping

Use the control bar, the tray icon, or press your record hotkey again. The controls themselves never appear in the video. The 🗑 button discards the recording.

Tip: 30 fps is plenty for tutorials and makes smaller files. Use 60 fps for fast motion.

Editing recordings Pro

The video editor opens as soon as you stop. Nothing you do changes the original recording, which is always kept.

  • Play / pause: click the video, the ▶ button, or press Space. ← / → jump one second.
  • Seek: click the timeline. Select a range: drag along it.
  • Trim: move the playhead and click Trim start here or Trim end here.
  • Cut: select a range and click Cut selection (shown in red).
  • Speed up: select a range, choose 1.5×–8×, click Speed up selection (orange). Great for skipping boring waits.
  • Zoom in: drag the area to zoom into. Zooms ease in and out smoothly (blue).
  • Text callouts: type a caption, click Add text, then click where it should appear (green).
  • Crop: drag the part of the frame to keep.
  • Undo with Ctrl+Z. Remove any single edit with its ✕ in the side panel.

Exporting

Choose MP4 (with or without audio) or GIF (set the frame rate and maximum width; lower means smaller files), then click Export. From there you can open it, show it in its folder, copy its path, or Upload & copy link.

Step-by-step guides Pro

Builds a how-to document while you work: each screenshot becomes a numbered step.

  1. Tray → Step-by-step guide → Start new guide. The capture screen opens right away: select what step 1 should show.
  2. The editor opens with Guide step 1 at the top. Type a caption such as "Click Settings, then Billing" (optional), annotate, and press Ctrl+Enter.
  3. A small guide bar stays at the top of the screen. Get the next screen ready, then click + Next step (or press your capture shortcut). It never shows up in your screenshots.
  4. Click Finish…, name the guide and pick PDF or Markdown. Guides are saved in Pictures\Snapr\Guides.

Closed the bar? The guide is paused, not lost: Tray → Step-by-step guide → Continue guide. ✕ on the bar discards the guide.

History & search

Tray → History… shows every capture and recording. Type in the search box to find screenshots by the text inside them, such as an error message or a name in a chat. The text is read on your PC.

  • Open any screenshot in the editor again. The edited copy is saved as a new file, and the original stays as it was.
  • Deleting sends files to the Recycle Bin, so mistakes can be undone.

Connecting your cloud Pro

Snapr uploads to your own storage, so your files never touch our servers. Open Settings → Upload and choose one:

  • Google Drive: click Connect and sign in through your browser. Snapr can only see the files it uploads, never the rest of your Drive.
  • Amazon S3 / Cloudflare R2: enter the endpoint, region (auto for R2), bucket and access keys. Add a public base URL for permanent links; otherwise Snapr creates 7-day share links.
  • Imgur: paste a free Client-ID from Imgur's developer site.

Click Save & send a test upload to check it works. Turn on Upload every capture and export automatically to skip the button entirely. The share link is copied the moment the upload finishes.

Keys and tokens are stored encrypted with your Windows account.

Free vs Pro

Free, forever: region, window, full-screen and delayed capture; the editor with every annotation tool; saved styles; History with text search; themes.

Pro, one-time payment: scrolling capture, screen recording (MP4/GIF, audio, webcam), the video editor, auto-redaction, beautify, step-by-step guides, and cloud upload. See pricing.

Free and Pro are separate downloads. Pro features aren't hidden inside the free version, so to get Pro, install Snapr Pro from your license email. Your settings and History carry over.

License & activation

Activating

  1. After paying, your license key appears on the thank-you page (with a Copy button) and arrives by email from support@snapr.dev.
  2. Install Snapr Pro using the download button in that email.
  3. Open Settings → License, paste the key, click Activate.

You need internet only for that moment. After that, Snapr Pro works fully offline, with no check-ins and nothing running in the background.

Using it on more than one PC

  • One license works on up to 3 PCs at the same time.
  • Reinstalling Snapr on the same PC doesn't use up another slot.
  • To move it to a new PC, free a slot first:
    • On the old PC: Settings → License → Remove license from this PC, or
    • From anywhere: support.snapr.dev/manage. Enter your purchase email, click the link we send you, and press Deactivate next to the old PC.
  • A license can be moved 3 times a month. Need more? Contact support.

"This key is already active on 3 PCs"

Free a slot as described above, then click Activate again. The message lists the names of the PCs using your key.

Lost your key?

Search your inbox for "Snapr Pro license key" (check spam too). Still missing? Contact support with your purchase email.

Updates

Your license covers every 1.x release. Once a day Snapr checks for a new version and offers to download it, but never installs anything by itself. Updating keeps your license, settings and History.

Where your files live

  • Captures and recordings: your save folder (default Pictures\Snapr). Step-by-step guides (images and exported PDF/Markdown) are in its Guides folder.
  • Settings, the search index and your license: a hidden app folder (%APPDATA%\Snapr), stored encrypted so only your Windows account on that PC can read them.
  • Text recognition, redaction and face detection all run on your PC. Uploads go only to the storage you connected.
  • Activating Pro sends us your key, your PC's name and a random ID for that install, nothing else. See the privacy policy.

Troubleshooting

A hotkey doesn't work

Another app (often a game overlay or another screenshot tool) may already use it. Snapr tells you which hotkeys failed at startup. Pick a different combo in Settings → Hotkeys.

My full-screen capture shows the wrong monitor

Full-screen capture takes the monitor your mouse is on. Move the mouse there first, or switch to All monitors in Settings → General.

No system sound in my recording

In the record setup, check the system-audio meter moves while sound plays. If it doesn't, make sure the sound plays through your default output device (Windows Settings → System → Sound).

The webcam bubble says "No camera found"

Close other apps that use the camera (Teams, Zoom, the Camera app), then check Windows Settings → Privacy & security → Camera allows desktop apps.

The video preview looks choppy

Previewing 60 fps recordings can stutter on slower PCs. The exported video is always smooth. Record at 30 fps for lighter files and smoother previews.

Text looks blurry

Update to the latest version. Snapr is fully DPI-aware on 125% / 150% displays.

Windows warns about the installer

Only download Snapr from this site. If SmartScreen shows a warning, click More info → Run anyway.

"Couldn't reach the Snapr server" when activating

Activation needs internet once. Check you're online (and that a firewall or VPN isn't blocking Snapr), then try again.

Still stuck? Questions about your license, payment, refund or a bug go to support.snapr.dev. You'll get a reply by email.
